Agenda January 25th, 2011

Students, sorry to miss you again. Please have someone go water the plants in the greenhouse and be extra nice to Jim because he is taking time out of his prep to cover my class. See you soon.

1. Movie: Biodiversity. You watched the first half. Now finish the rest of the movie which involves how humans impact biodiversity. Be sure you know what HIPPO stands for. Each letter stands for one way that humans impact biodiversity. The movie is in the TV and you can just press play. It has about 30 minutes left.

2. Ecotourism: Please read and discuss.
Eco-tourism: Perhaps the most over-used and mis-used word in the travel industry. But what does it mean? The Ecotourism Society defines it as "responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of the local people". A walk through the rainforest is not eco-tourism unless that particular walk somehow benefits that environment and the people who live there. A rafting trip is only eco-tourism if it raises awareness and funds to help protect the watershed. A loose interpretation of this definition allows many companies to promote themselves as something that they are not. If true eco-tourism is important to you, ask plenty of questions to determine if your trip will help "conserve and improve" the places you visit.

3. Ecotourism assignment: Now I know we started this assignment a couple of weeks ago, but the link I gave you was outdated, so I created a new improved assignment. Keep in mind that the purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to one way in which countries are conserving biodiversity, and to give you some ideas when you create your ecotour brochure.
Ecuador
Brazil
Panama
Costa Rica
Belize
Galapagos
Please choose one of the ecotoursim destinations above and answer the following questions:
1. Why did you choose this area?
2. What countries surround your destination, and what continent is your destination in?
3. How will you arrive there?
4. How many days is your trip?
5. What is the total cost?
6. Describe in your view the highlights of the trip (at least three).
7. What types of things about the country and conservation could you learn from this trip?
8. What ares three ideas about the trip that you could use in your eco-trip to your chosen hotspot?
9. What are some species or ecosystems you would encounter on your trip?
9. Define ecotourism in your own words. After reviewing this trip would you go on it? Why or why not.
10. Please hand your assignment into JIm. For those who didn't finish the hotspot research from last class, please work on that after this assignment is complete.
