Students:
We have been discussing food chains for about three weeks now. Today I want you to begin thinking about the ways in which humans impact food chains. We begin by looking at bioaccumulation.
1. First read this short article about food chains and bioaccumulation. Stop at Case study: Long Island. Take notes on things that will help you understand bioaccumulation.
2. Next go to this DDT diagram and enlarge it to get a visual of the impact DDT has on organisms. Draw the diagram along with your notes.
3. Finally watch the bioaccumulation video.
4. Working in pairs go to Great lakes. You will have to scroll down this website to find the information you need (bioaccumulation and biomagnification). Answer the following questions:
1. What pollutant is entering this aquatic area?
2. How did the pollutant arrive?
3. How is the pollutant impacting the food chain.
4. Draw a diagram of the food chain and indicate where and how the pesticide or chemical is impacting the food chain.
