Invasive species

Answer the following questions about your chosen invasive species:

    Kudzu
    Kudzu is a semi woody vine and is planted to fight soil erosion.

    2. Kudzu kills other plants by smothering them with its leaves.

    3. Kudzu was introduced at a 1876 convention in Philidelphia. From the mid 30's to early 50's, farmers were incoureged to plant Kudzu to fight soil erosion.

    4. It spreads through vines of other plants.
    5. You must completely eradicate its roots and mow that area of the lawn every month for two growing seasons. You also have to destroy the cut roots to.

  2. 1. Purple Loosestrife is a plant also known as Purple Plauge. Its got purple spiked flowers
    2. Purple Loosestrife can have millions of seeds which can spread very easily by wind or water. and they take up important wetland habitat space.
    3. Purple Loosestrife was brought over in the early 1800's. It's been promoted as a nectar plant to beekeepers
    4. Each plant can produce millions of seeds that spread by wind or water. Also Purple Loosestrife doesnt have a predator like a bug to eat its roots and leaves
    5. Small populations hand removal will work but if they get big in numbers its hard to stop them.

  3. What is it?
    It is a water fern with a horizontal stem that is just under water. It makes folded floating leaves. They are used in aquariums and garden ponds. It quickly grows out of control.



    Why is it a threat?
    They prevent the passage of sunlight and oxygen that other species may need. It eliminates opportunities for boating and fishing.



    How did it get there?
    Its native to brazil, but it was probably spread by the aquarium and garden pond trend.



    How does it spread?
    by boaters, it can double in numbers from 2-10 days, and can cover an entire surface of water



    How can it be removed?
    Its almost impossible to remover large infestations, but if you can it needs to be done by hand. little infestations can and should be removed immediately by hand.

  4. The heaven tree is a chinese tree also know as ailenthus. The tree rapidly grows and has a grey bark with light brown twigs and large leaves. It can grow in extreme weathers.

    2. The tree grows too fast and too much.
    3.A missionary thought it was something else.
    4. The tree produces 325,000 seeds a year.
    5. Pull the seedlings by hand before the tap root develops.

  5. Multiflora Rose

    What is it?
    It is a rose also called rambler rose. Its thorny, and a perennial shrub with clusters of of white to pink flowers. The flowers bloom in may or june. red rose hips appear during the summer. The Multiflora rose is found on edges of farms and along high ways.

    Why is it a threat?
    the multiflora rose invades and damages pastures and unplowed plants. It crowds out vegetation, and stops other plants from growing by taking away nutrients.

    How did it get there?
    Introduced to the U.S from japan in 1886 as an under stock for ornamental roses.
    How does it spread?
    Birds are responsible for spreading seeds and stay viable for a number of years.
    How can you remove it?
    application of herbicide, and mowing can help keep larger infestations under control but will not solve the problem.
